Inter-University/Collegiate Projects Enrich Student Experience

Industrial and Engineering Technology students Alex Culbertson and Andy Latimer have been working outside class time in connection with the MSU-UHM (University of Hawaii Manoa) Lunar Ranging Project. Alex and Andy made some 30 lunar observations with a precise theodolite in March at one end of a baseline that connects Murray with Manoa.

Prior to the work, Alex had observed our station for latitude and longitude and had precomputed the position of the moon using the ephemeris of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to ensure that simultaneous observations could be made from both locations.

We are grateful for the support of Professor Kendall Hee of the Department of Civil Engineering at UHM and his students with whom they communicated by cell during thier field observations in order to coordinate the work.
Dr. Tom Lough (MSU COE) kindly prepared a spreadsheet to facilitate data reduction, and Robert Castleberry (COE student) assisted in the field.
It will be some time before all computations are complete and the outcome of the project is known.
