ABSTRACT

The purpose of my research was to determine whether differences existed between the outcomes of a new multi-disciplinary course, Science 101, and the traditional discipline- based science- 199 series (i.e., BIO 199 and GSC 199) at Murray State University. I used four criteria and a background survey to identify any differences in outcomes of the courses. The criteria included objective knowledge, attitude towards, science, and science literacy. My null hypothesis was that there is no significant difference between test and survey scores of students in SCI 101 and the 199-series courses. I rejected my null hypothesis because there were consistent differences between the scores of students in SCI 101 and the 199-series. I attributed the higher scores and more positive attitudes of students in SCI 101 to the more integrative and hands-on approach to instruction compared with the 199-series.
