Frequently Asked Questions

Q: May I bring my additional credentials, i.e. resume, recommendations, essay, to the scholarship office or may I have them postmarked by February 1?
A: You may bring your credentials to the scholarship office as long as you do so by February 1. Materials postmarked by February 1 are also acceptable.

Q: What happens if I don't bring my credentials or have them postmarked by February 1?
A: You will be considered a late applicant. If awards are refused, you will be considered in second choice selections which are made in August every year..

Q: What is the deadline for transfer scholarships?
A: The deadline is February 1- for all scholarships.

Q: I sent my transcript to the admissions office, do I have to send one to the scholarship office as well?
A: Yes.

Q: Do I have to declare a major to be eligible for scholarships?
A: No, although some scholarships require the declaration of a major for eligibility.

Q: My letters of recommendation were sent separate from my application, what happens if they don't arrive by February 1?
A: As long as they are postmarked by February 1, you will not be penalized.

Q: I haven't taken the ACT. Can I take it in February and report the results to the scholarship office?
A: Yes. However, you will be considered a late applicant.

Q: Do I have to enter the Gross Family Income on my application?
A: No. However, it is considered in the selection of some scholarships.

Q: I do not know how much money my parents make. What do I do?
A: Provide your best estimate.

Q: What is an adult student?
A: An adult student is an individual who is 23 or older and who hasn't had the opportunity to earn a college degree because of certain circumstances. (work, marriage, family obligations, etc.)

Q: What do I need to include in my letters of recommendation? Who do I need to write the letters?
A: The letters should come from someone who can verify your academic/leadership abilities as well as your personal character and integrity. Examples include professors, ministers, coaches, employers, etc.

Q: The scholarship I want to apply for indicates I need to be a junior. I am a sophomore but will be a junior in the fall. May I apply for the scholarship?
A: Yes. The awarding of the scholarship is dependant upon your class status as of the award period. (If you will be a junior in the fall, you may apply).

Q: Do I have to get letters of recommendation for every scholarship for which I am applying?
A: No. One letter will be used for all scholarships.

Q: How do I know if I need to reapply?
A: Certain scholarships are automatically renewed and you need not reapply. Examples are the Presidential, John W. Carr, Recognition and Marvin D. Mills Scholarships. These are renewed based on maintenance of certain GPA requirements. All others must be reapplied for. To be competitive, you should maintain a 3.5 GPA.

Q: When will I know if I have received a scholarship?
A: Award letters are generally sent by April 1.

Q: I would like to know the scholarships I have received in the past. How can I find out?
A: Go to http://www.murraystate.edu/scholarships/archive/.

Q: I am a married student. Do I need to include parental information on my application?
A: No.

Q: Is there an over-award policy?
A: Yes. It can be accessed here.
