Social Work, Criminal Justice & Gerontology

Social Work | Criminal Justice | Gerontology Minor

The Department of Social Work, Criminal Justice, and Gerontology offers an undergraduate degree, a Bachelor’s of Social Work (BSW), a Bachelor’s of Science, and a Bachelor’s of Arts in Criminal Justice.  The department also coordinates an interdisciplinary minor in Social Gerontology.
The social work program is designed to meet the career aspirations of those interested in fields such as child welfare, mental health, school social work, medical social work, and community organization.  Students who receive the B.S.W., work in recreational programs for children, group homes, public assistance programs and public housing, domestic violence shelters, hospitals, and nursing homes.
The criminal justice program prepares students to work in agencies that specialize in law enforcement, adult and juvenile corrections, pretrial release, business and industrial security, and criminal justice agency administration.  Students receiving the Bachelor’s of Science and Bachelor’s of Arts degrees work for city and state police departments, parole and security agencies, and for local industries.
Both the social work and criminal justice programs require participation in a field placement in an agency setting during the last year of course study.
