Web Typefaces
When considering a typeface for the web, it's
important to consider two main things: legibility and installation base.
A font that is easy to read is obvious, the second consideration, installation
base, isn't quite as obvious. "Installation base" refers to users who
have a particular font installed on their computers. As the web designer,
you can choose to use any font you wish in your web page. But if the
user (anyone who views your web page) doesn't have that particular font
installed on his or her computer, the font will not be what you specified — a
"default font" will appear instead. You will have no idea what that default
font may be.
So what do you do? Fortunately, a few fonts have become "standard" on
most computers, meaning you can safely assume that when you specify Arial,
for instance, Arial will, indeed, appear on the user's screen.
Murray State's official web typefaces (or "fonts")
are Arial and Verdana. A third typeface — Zurich Ultra Black Extended BT — probably
is NOT installed on many users' computers. So how can you use it? Thought it's
by no means mandatory that you use Zurich Ultra Black Extended BT at all, if
you do wish to use it, you'll have to "turn it into a picture" using an image
editing program such as Adobe Photoshop, CorelDraw, Paint Shop Pro, etc. Just
open the program, type what you want, and save as a .gif. Then place the image
in your web page.
