Feminism

Feminism

“The day will come when men will recognize woman as his peer, not only at the fireside, but in councils of the nation. Then, and not until then, will there be the perfect comradeship, the ideal union between the sexes that shall result in the highest development of the race."

Susan B. Anthony

What is Feminism?

Not only do I want to tell what feminism is, but I also want to tell you what it is not. On a fundamental level, it is about gender equality (social, political, and economic) - a movement that recognizes that the patterns of the treatment of women operate on a huge, societal level. Not all feminists agree why this inequality exists or what should be done to fix it. This disagreement is good though. It breeds a wonderful, varied body of theory and often intertwines with other disciplines. *Feminism seeks to include ALL women. Feminism is PRO-WOMAN; BUT this does not mean that it is anti-family, anti-male, anti-children, or anti-faith. It is also NOT PRO-ABORTION. These are all very common misconceptions about the feminist movement.

Facts vs. Myths

MYTH
The Feminist Movement is a movement against men.

FACT
Feminism is not about demeaning men, rather pushing forward and achieving equal rights for women.

MYTH
Feminists hate men.

FACT
The truth is that feminism provides women with empowerment, a love for their own gender, and a love for other women. This kind of empowerment does not involve hate for men, simply a love for women.

MYTH
Feminists are all lesbians.

FACT
The truth is that feminists are a diverse group of people, including people of all sexual orientations. All feminists are not lesbians and all lesbians are not feminists.

MYTH
Feminists are "butch."

FACT
The truth is that some feminists do not wear make-up, and prefer to dress comfortably. Feminists come in all forms, however, and do not fit into any stereotypes. (Physical appearance is not part of major feminist ideology).

MYTH
Feminists want to be men.

FACT
Feminists do not generally have any desire to be men. The whole idea is to value who women are and value the qualities that have been  labeled "female", qualities that society as a whole has viewed negatively.

MYTH
All feminists are women.

FACT
There are many men who are feminists, and actively so.

Interesting
Fact!

Despite the fact that more women are working and attaining higher-paying managerial and professional jobs, there are still many more women than men in low-paying jobs.

The average weekly earnings of women who work full-time is only 75 cents for ever dollar earned by men.
