Executive Director Update Winter 2023

Nov 28, 2023

Murray State campus gates are decorated with a holiday wreath.

The Honors College has had a great Fall semester. We enrolled 176 new incoming students for a total enrollment of 530. We got to know a fair number of the first year students at the Honors Prime retreat in July and the Presidential Fellows retreat in early August, and of course we got to meet the entire incoming class at Honors 101 on the Saturday before classes started. They are an energetic and fun cohort – new students have created both a “Bluey Club” and a “Taylor Swift Society” – and many have become regulars at the Tuesday night Honors Student Council meetings.

HSC has been active sponsoring social events and service opportunities around Murray, and their intramural teams have been surprisingly dominant in the independent leagues. Rose Nelson, a 2023 graduate, started a Fulbright ETA in South Korea. Honors Faculty took students to Memphis for a weekend in October, where they visited the National Civil Rights Museum, ate some Memphis BBQ and saw the Rock ‘N Soul Museum, among other things. Honors Happy Hours have continued, and Honors staff organized a very-well-attended open mic poetry reading in Franklin College.
