Murray State University Presidential Research and Creative Activity Symposium
Faculty Research and Creative Activity is a core expectation for faculty and plays an instrumental role at the university. Research and creative activity completed by faculty propels innovation, advances professions, and enhances the classroom experience for students on campus while bringing notoriety to Murray State University. Research and creative activity fosters collaboration and community across campus while benefiting students, who often collaborate with faculty on research, leading to high impact teaching practices. With President Ron Patterson's support, Murray State University will host an annual Research and Creative Activity Symposium to showcase faculty research and creative activity from across the university.
Unlike traditional research presentations, this symposium will introduce faculty and students to the research and creative activities of six faculty members in a PechaKucha/TED Talk style. These are fast-paced, concise, and visually engaging presentations, with a focus on telling the story of faculty research and creative activity. The goal is to have an exhilarating way to share the work of faculty across the university and inspire collaboration.
The six presenters will be selected by the Research Symposium Committee. Each presentation will be 7 minutes long, with approximately 20 images total. All full time faculty are invited to apply to present at the annual Presidential Research Symposium. The application process will consist of submitting an abstract for the presentations, three sample images, a traditional biography, and a non-traditional biography.

Required Materials
Abstract
Applicants will submit a one-paragraph abstract that describes the research or creative activity that will be presented.
Image samples
Applicants will submit three sample images that would be used for the presentation.
Academic Biography
A short professional biography summarizing the presenters professional education, education and scholarly achievements.
Non Traditional Biography
In addition to short traditional introductions we could also introduce speakers with non-traditional biographies. Applicants will submit a 1 paragraph non-traditional biography.
Example: Former soap slinger turned life enthusiast, Dr. Nikki Gaylord once ran a small-batch, all-natural soap company—because why not make the world a little cleaner and a little kinder at the same time? At home, life revolves around their rescue pitty (clearly the real boss), who they proudly consider their child. Married to her husband for 16 years and still choosing adventure together, Nikki and her husband are happiest with a packed suitcase, a concert ticket in hand, or both.

PechaKucha or Pecha Kucha (Japanese: ペチャクチャ, IPA: [petɕa ku͍̥tɕa],[chit-chat) is a presentation style in which 20 slides are shown for 20 seconds each (6 minutes and 40 seconds in total). The format, which keeps presentations concise and fast-paced, powers multiple-speaker events called PechaKucha Nights (PKNs). PechaKucha Night was devised in February 2003 by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham of Tokyo's Klein-Dytham Architecture (KDa), as a way to attract people to SuperDeluxe, their experimental event space in Roppongi, and to allow young designers to meet, show their work, and exchange ideas. In 2004, a few cities in Europe began holding PKNs, the first of several hundred cities that have since launched similar events around the world. As of May 2014, PKNs were held in over 700 cities worldwide. You can go to the Pecha Kucha website and look at presentations that are posted on their daily blog for inspiration.
