Course Requirements

Students study privately for four consecutive semesters with concurrent ensemble participation. Enrollment in MUS 170 at earliest offering of the course or prior complete of MUS 170 is required for enrollment in applied study.

Students are required to be in an ensemble for four semesters concurrent with applied study. Major ensembles include Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, University Orchestra, Concert Choir, Vox Lumina, Una Voce. Some performance areas have more specific requirements. Students should consult their advisors and applied lesson teachers for detailed requirements.

All Music minors are expected to fulfill the Aural Skills, Theory, and Keyboard requirement.
Aural Skills MUS 170, MUS 173, and Theory MUS 171, MUS 174, must be taken in sequence, with a "C" or better to continue in the sequence. Keyboard MUS 172, MUS 175 must be taken in sequence, with a "C" or better to continue. Students with keyboard background may challenge one or both courses.

Electives may be chosen from any 300-, 400-, or 500-level MUS course in consultation with the Music minor advisor. Students may also take 300-level applied study once the 200-level proficiency has been passed. Elective applied study is dependent upon studio space. Students must meet course pre-requisites or have permission of the instructor if there is a prerequisite.
