Campus operations are continuing to take place as scheduled for today, Monday, February 17.

Please see the following information for today, Monday, February 17:

  • Dining operations open as normal include Winslow Dining Hall, Fast Track and Chick-Fil-A.
  • The Curris Center and Waterfield Library are open and operating as normal.
  • The Bauernfeind Wellness Center is closed today.

Full electrical power was restored to the campus on Sunday afternoon, with the exception of the CFSB Center, Wellness Center, RH White and Regents Halls.

Some buildings may be experiencing cooler temperatures. Building coordinators can contact Facilities Management to coordinate any building issues.

We greatly appreciate your patience during this unprecedented weather event that has impacted our campus, region and state. Our thoughts and prayers are with the individuals and families in the Commonwealth and our multi-state region who have been impacted by this past weekend’s terrible weather incident, including the tragic loss of life in our state and others surrounding us.

Following the lightning strike that was the cause of the power outage early Saturday morning, crews, contractors and University personnel have continued to work around the clock to resolve the electrical issue to the remaining buildings.

February 16 - 4:00 p.m. - As you know, we experienced an unprecedented weather system that has impacted our campus, region and state, including a lightning strike on Saturday morning that has disrupted power to campus.

Full electrical power has been restored to the campus with the exception of the CFSB Center, Wellness Center, RH White Hall and Regents Hall. Contractors are continuing to work on the restoration of full power, due to the lightning strike, to these buildings. Residents of RH White and Regents Halls will be contacted by Housing staff regarding temporary relocation.

Classes will be canceled on Monday, February 17. This includes both in-person instruction and online instruction as well as all of our regional campuses. Campus operations will continue to take place as scheduled on Monday, February 17, and all employees should report to work for their normal schedule with all offices open normal hours.

We will follow Item II University Closure protocol found in the University Weather Notifications and Procedures on myGate.

We anticipate returning to full campus operations including classes on Tuesday, February 18.

We greatly appreciate your patience. Following the lightning strike that was the cause of the power outage early Saturday morning, crews, contractors and University personnel have worked around the clock, beginning Saturday morning. This occurred throughout heavy rains and severe weather activity, including tornado warnings and hail.

Please see the following operational information for the remainder of today, Sunday, February 16:

  • The Curris Center is open and will operate during normal hours this evening. Dining options within Curris Center will not be open.
  • Winslow Dining Hall is open and will operate during normal hours this evening.
  • Waterfield Library and the Bauernfeind Wellness Center are closed today.

Feb. 16 - 8:55 a.m. - Contractors are on campus, and we are continuing to work to restore power to all parts of the campus as a result of the lightning strike yesterday morning.  Thank you for your patience during this unprecedented weather/electrical power event.

All students currently living in the residence halls should go to Winslow Dining Hall, which has full power and food/drinks.  We will continue to check on all residential students, and bus transportation is available for them to Winslow by calling 270-809-2222.   Winslow Dining Hall is expected to have normal operating hours today.

Our primary concern is the health and safety of our students during this weather/power event.   If any students need assistance or have questions, they are asked to reach out to their Residence Director/RD or Residence Advisor/RA.

Regarding the scheduled Men's Basketball game today, please stay tuned to GoRacers.com and social media.

More information will be provided as it becomes available, including the status of campus events and activities today.  Our plan is to operate on a regular schedule tomorrow.

Feb. 15 - 11:40 p.m. - The campus electrical power outage was due to a lightning strike early Saturday morning. The Murray campus remains without power, except for the residence halls. Residence halls are being powered at this time through our generator.

Early tomorrow morning the contractors will resume work to restore power during the day. The residence halls must be powered down between 7:00 am and 8:00 am tomorrow morning to complete this work. However, Winslow Dining Hall is expected to have normal operating hours tomorrow.

Regarding the scheduled Men's Basketball game tomorrow,  please stay tuned to goracers.com and social media.

More information will be provided as it becomes available, including the status of campus events and activities.

Feb. 15 - 2:39 p.m. The Women's Basketball game rescheduled for 3:00 p.m. today has been delayed to 3:30 p.m.  Electrical power is on in the CFSB Center.

Winslow Dining Hall is currently open and will be open regular hours this evening.

Murray Electric System and contractors are continuing to work on the power outage affecting the remainder of campus.

Any other events or campus activities scheduled for today are cancelled.

We will keep you updated as we learn more.

Feb. 15 - 12:30 p.m. The women's basketball game, which was scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., will now begin at 3 p.m. (see above note and update).

Feb. 15 - 12:02 p.m. Due to weather issues and a power surge, electrical power is down on campus.  Murray Electric System and outside electrical contractors are on campus to address the outage.

To ensure receipt of emergency notifications (including weather-related emergencies) from the RacerAlert system, the University encourages all employees and students to update their contact information through their myGate accounts.

What is RacerAlert?

RacerAlert is the system of emergency communications that allows the Murray State Police Department to provide information during an emergency or when prompt communication is required. The RacerAlert webpage, in conjunction with the University’s homepage, will be a place that the University community can view the most up-to-date information during any critical incident. Many of the alerts you might receive during an emergency will send you to this page so that we do not have to send texts and emails for every update.

RacerAlert’s Emergency Notification System (ENS)

The Murray State University’s Racer Alert ENS is a system intended to notify the campus community about any situation or condition that could threaten the safety of individuals on campus. You can expect to receive the following types of messages from RacerAlert:

  • Alerts- These are emergency alerts letting you know about incident or condition that requires immediate attention and are required by the Clery Act. At a minimum, this type of notification will be made using text messages and emails. It may also include sirens, phone display, social media, and campus signage.

  • Timely Warning Notices- These are messages about crimes that have already occurred but represent an ongoing threat. These notices are also required by the Clery Act.

  • Police Department Announcements- These are messages sent by the Murray State Police to inform the Murray State community of general safety information that is not required by the Clery Act, but which the police believe will assist the community in being safer on and near campus. An example would be if a series of robberies occurred near campus, but not on campus, and the victims included students, faculty, and staff.

  • Test Messages- Testing is an important part of any emergency alert system. Murray State Police will test the ENS at least once per semester. This testing is also required by the Clery Act.
