Biography

Sam McCoy was born and raised in Orlando, FL. She is a contemporary painter who focuses on the boundaries between natural and hyperreal landscapes. She draws her inspiration from hyperlocal, curated gardens and spaces that are often travel destinations. Between eco-tourism destinations and constructed gardens, McCoy explores the contradictions of her experiences in these places. Pushing saturation, she’s inspired by artificiality and the spectacle of tourism in America.

Before starting work in her current position teaching foundations at Murray State University, she was the Director of Exhibitions and a featured Wildlife Artist at Thomasville Center for the Arts, and an Instructor in the Fine Arts, Interior Design, and Architecture departments at Florida State University, where she also received her MFA in Studio Art. She now works in her home studio in Murray, KY, exploring how agriculture and protected forests color the area.
