MURRAY, Ky. — Alpha Mu Gamma (AMG), Murray State University’s foreign language society, is hosting its second "Dinner and a Show" event of the semester at Burrito Shack, 214 N. 15th Street in Murray, at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 29.

The gathering takes place right before the Cinema International free screening of the South Korean horror film, Exhuma in Faculty Hall room 208 at 7 p.m. Any Murray State student is welcome to join the club for a fun outing and scary movie ahead of Halloween weekend.

AMG hosts two “Dinner and a Show” events each semester paired with select films from Cinema International. AMG held its first event of the fall semester on Oct. 3 for the film The Girls Are Alright.

Grace Hanvey, president of AMG and a senior engineering physics major with a double minor in applied mathematics and Spanish, said her personal love of languages and traveling to other countries comes from the desire to understand other people’s perspectives and share her love of science and space with people from different backgrounds. AMG continues its participation in Cinema International because the series and its post-screening discussions also encourage intercultural exchanges.

“(Cinema International helps us) better educate our members about social issues and foster a greater understanding outside of the narrow lens that each of us uses to view the world,” said Hanvey. “One of our core goals is to share American culture with foreign exchange students and learn more about their cultural traditions.”

AMG also hosts other types of events each semester that are geared toward educating the Murray State community about language learning, culture and traveling abroad. Prior to its "Dinner and a Show" events, AMG began the semester with a “Lost in Translation” kickoff meeting that featured an emoji translation game and a “Constructing Across Cultures” Lego brick flower-making night. On Saturday, Oct. 31, the organization will host trick-or-treating with international students on Halloween, one of Hanvey’s favorite events.

International films remain an important resource for students across Murray State’s campus. In addition to Exhuma, the Cinema International series will also show We Shall Not Be Moved on Thursday, Oct. 22 and Saturday, Oct. 24 in Faculty Hall room 208 beginning at 7 p.m. Released in 2024 and directed by Pierre Saint-Martin, We Shall Not Be Moved (alternatively titled No nos moverán) represents Mexican history and “unhealed national wounds,” as phrased by Variety’s Carlos Aguilar. The film is being shown as part of the Spanish Film Club series with the support of Pragda and the Secretary of State for Culture of Spain.

All Cinema International screenings are free and open to the public.
