Political science professor named Murray State University Distinguished Mentor for 2026
By Dr. Amanda Joyce | Mar 4, 2026
MURRAY, Ky. — In February, Dr. Brittany Wood, Murray State University assistant professor of political science was named the recipient of the 19th annual University Distinguished Mentor Award by an intercampus committee.
All eight nominations were highly competitive, according to the awards chair, Dr. Amanda Joyce, professor in the Psychology Department.
“It makes sense that Murray State would have strong competition for this award because our faculty are deeply committed to supporting students and their learning, both inside and outside of the classroom,” said Joyce. “Dr. Wood should take great pride in rising to the top of such a talented pool of candidates.”
In the evaluation process, committee members look for impact on students’ educations, careers and lives, as well as significant application of the student research, scholarly or creative work as evidenced by publications, presentations, performances and exhibits.
Akayla Henson, a recent graduate of Murray State University, said that, “She went above and beyond…Because of her mentorship, I had the opportunity to co-author and publish research, an achievement that significantly strengthened my graduate school applications and prepared me for the work of academia.”
Another student and mentee, Mary Huffman, said, “Even amongst her laudable peers, Dr. Wood stands out. In all things, she sets an example of professionalism and personability while challenging students to take risks and engage more deeply with their education.”
In response to being named award recipient, Wood said, “I am honored and grateful to receive the University Distinguished Mentor Award. This recognition is especially meaningful because it reflects the incredible students I have the privilege to work with. Supporting their intellectual growth, confidence and ambitions is the most rewarding part of my job.”
This award will be presented at the Faculty Recognition Banquet on April 16 as part of the annual campus Spring Scholars Week celebration. Wood will receive a $1,000 stipend and have her name engraved on a permanent plaque displayed in the Provost Office.
The award is coordinated by the Office of Research and Creative Activity and the Provost Office. The next round of nominations will be due toward the end of January 2027. See murraystate.edu/ORCA for more information.
