MURRAY, Ky. — Murray State University’s Department of Global Languages and Theatre Arts welcomed area middle and high school students on March 6 for its annual Global Languages Showcase.

The Global Languages Showcase brings high school students to Murray State’s campus for a day of lively language learning, cultural exploration and hands-on enrichment designed to spark curiosity and enthusiasm for global languages.

In addition to the activities sessions, the department organized a Varsity Foreign Language Project for individual students or groups of students. Projects were required to be original work and could include poster presentations, videos, dioramas, clothing, or other kinds of artwork that demonstrated thoughtful academic engagement with a world language or culture.

"The Global Languages Showcase is one of our favorite events of the year because it brings together educators and students from across the region to celebrate languages and cultures,” said Dr. Robert “Moses” Fritz, associate professor of Spanish and one of the event organizers. “We value the opportunity to work with our colleagues in local schools and to meet students who are discovering a passion for language study. The showcase helps us build a community that supports the next generation of language learners."

Participating schools included Carlisle County High School (Kentucky), Community Christian Academy (Paducah, Kentucky), Graves County High School (Kentucky), Henry County High School (Tennessee), Hickman County High School (Kentucky) and St. Mary High School (Paducah, Kentucky).

Winners of the Varsity Foreign Language Project competition include:

First place: "La Llorona" - Sam Walters (Community Christian Academy)

Second place: "La Leyenda de la Ratita Presumida" - Emilee Horstman, Molly Summarell, Rebekah Capps, Emerson Blais, Maggie Peck (Community Christian Academy)

Third place: "Joan Miró's 'Femme et oiseaux dans la nuit'" - Annie Grace Snow, Lindsey Anderson, Iasaiah McManus, Reyn Lindsey (Henry County High School)
