Murray State University hosts Math Day 2024 for 10 area high schools

MURRAY, Ky. – The Murray State University Department of Mathematics and Statistics hosted Math Day 2024 on campus on Feb. 7.

Ten high schools from the western Kentucky area participated in the event for a total of 175 registered students and 17 teachers. Schools that participated: Calloway County High School, Carlisle County High School, Fulton County High School, Graves County High School, Hickman County High School, Joppa High School, Mayfield High School, Murray High School, Northside Baptist Christian School and Paducah Tilghman High School.

High school students and teachers engaged in a full day of math competitions and math-related activities in Lovett Auditorium and Faculty Hall. The day began with an individual math competition in the morning, followed by an alumnus talk by Demi St. John, who graduated from Murray State with a double major in mathematics and physics in 2015. She currently works at Stifel Financial Corp. in St. Louis, Missouri. After lunch, students participated in a team math competition, where the teams of three to four worked through hands-on activities.

Awards were presented to the top performing teams in the team competition, the top performing students in each exam level (lower and upper) and the top performing school.

Team competition winners:

First place: Nate Dyer, Malaika Gachoka, Ayva Pemble-Conley and Tony Pfannerstill, of Murray High School.

Second place: Jude Bazzell, Riley Hudson, Gary Rogers and Bo Stom, of Calloway County High School.

Third place: Isabelle Bourne, Tatum Faulkner, Preston Key and Adeline Pitman, of Murray High School.

 

Lower and upper exam winners:

First place: Anastasia Arkova, Murray High School; Amber Wu, Calloway County High School.

Second place: Sean Williams, Calloway County High School; Ewin Porter, Murray High School.

Third place: Ali Yarali, Murray High School; Will Imes, Murray High School.

Fourth place: Aubrey Naber, Calloway County High School; Ben Coltharp, Paducah Tilghman High School.

Fifth place: Nathan Madding, Carlisle County High School; Cameron Wright, Paducah Tilghman High School.

 

Recognition for scholarships: Top juniors taking the upper level exam:

Highest score: Will Imes, Murray High School

Second highest score: Gary Rogers, Calloway County High School

Third highest score: Jack Williams, Calloway County High School

 

Recognition for scholarships: Top seniors taking the upper level exam:

Highest score: Ewin Porter, Murray High School

Second highest score: Ben Coltharp, Paducah Tilghman High School

Third highest score: Cameron Wright, Paducah Tilghman High School
