January 30, 2018, 9:15am-1:30pm, held at the Curris Center (check-in begins at 8:15am)

Math Day 2018 includes a math competition intended for students at any level of high school math knowledge and various math related activities. More than a dozen high schools from West Kentucky are expected to bring students to participate in the event.

The math competition includes two different exams, broken down by current class year. While both exams will contain questions of varying difficulty and include some reasoning questions, the underlying topics will be unique. The Lower Level Exam, geared towards freshman and sophomore students, will include questions on algebra and geometry. The Upper Level Exam for juniors and seniors will contain questions on trigonometry in addition to other upper level high school material (calculus, probability, statistics, etc.). Awards will be given to the top five students on each level of exam along with an award for the top performing school.

The math-related activities include:
• The 2nd annual event for the Jesse D. Jones Lecture Series: a panel entitled "What Can I Actually Do with a Math Degree?". During the panel high schools students will be able to ask a current Murray State undergraduate, faculty member and alumni questions about pursuing a career in mathematics.
• A group competition where students in groups of 4 – 5 try to work through as many hands-on activities as possible in the time allotted.
