Alumni Awards and Recognition

Distinguished Alumni Award

Established in 1962, the University presents this award annually to alumni who have made meaningful contributions to their profession on a local, state and national level. The Distinguished Alumni Award is the highest honor granted by the Murray State Alumni Association, recognizing alumni who have excelled personally and professionally. Previous Distinguished Alumni award recipients include Pulitzer Prize winning journalists and renowned authors, research scientists and physicians, executives, educators, military leaders and Emmy Award-winning broadcasters.

Nominations are accepted each year until Dec. 15.  Complete the nomination form online.

Top 22 Under 40 -- Inaugural Class, 2019

The Murray State University Alumni Association Young Alumni Council is searching for the inaugural Top 22 Under 40 class. We are ISO the most influential, innovative and inspiring Murray State alumni under the age of 40, who have distinguished themselves among their peers and continue to make a significant impact on the world. Why 22? Because everyone does the 40 thing! And, we want to pay tribute to nearly a century of difference-making since Murray State's founding in 1922. The 22 finalists will be featured on the Murray State Young Alumni and Murray State University Alumni and Friends social media channels throughout the month of December, and one overall winner will be selected from the top 22 as the first-ever MSUAA Distinguished Young Alumnus/Alumna in 2020. Wouldn't that look killer on your resume?!  

To be eligible, nominees must: 

  • Be under the age of 40 as of December 31, 2019
  • Be a current member of the Murray State University Alumni Association and Young Alumni 
  • Have earned an associate, undergraduate or graduate degree from Murray State University
  • Exhibit and embrace Murray State University's mission and core values
  • Demonstrate a lifelong commitment to alma mater
  • Have made a significant impact in their industry and community
  • Be willing to submit a headshot and other biographical information to be used for publicity purposes by Murray State University 

Nominations will be accepted until Monday, November 25. Once the nomination has been submitted online, the Murray State Office of Alumni Relations will reach out to the nominee to provide further information and a link to the application form.

Applications are due by Friday, November 29, in order to be included. The overall Distinguished Young Alumni recipient picked from the top 22 finalists will be invited to receive the award and provide brief remarks during the annual Distinguished Alumni Banquet Friday, April 17. Golden Horseshoe Award

Established in 1987, this award honors alumni whose dedication to Murray State has contributed to the continued growth and excellence of the University through university-held positions and/or exceptional volunteer support. The honoree’s name is added to the Golden Horseshoe plaque in the Easley Alumni Center.

Distinguished Professor Award

Established in 1964, this student-nominated award recognizes an outstanding faculty member who has had a profound and positive influence on students, both inside and outside of the classroom. The Distinguished Professor is awarded in a surprise classroom visit, receives a $1,000 cash award, and leads the faculty processional at May commencement. The honoree also will have his or her name added to the Distinguished Professor plaque in Faculty Hall.
