The decision followed several important considerations, including Hart Residence Hall reaching the end of its useful life as a residential facility. Continuing to make investments in the building is not the most responsible long-term use of university resources. Most importantly, this decision keeps students first by allowing the University to focus its resources on residential environments that will best support their needs in the years to come.

• Current Hart residents will be able to reserve a space in all other residence halls on campus based on availability of spaces during the 2027-28 housing room reservation process. 

• Current Hart residents will also have the first opportunity to reserve a space in the Learning Commons, the newest addition to our Residence Halls opening Fall 2027.

• The Housing Office will open the 2027-28 Housing application for current residents in March 2027. 

• During the application process current residents will be able to reserve a room for the 2027-28 academic year. The standard room reservation process for all current residents takes place over four (4) weeks as follows:

  • First Week - same hall, same room

  • Second Week - same hall, different room

  • Third and Fourth Weeks - any hall, any room

• Based on this Fall 2027 information, the regular first two weeks of this process cannot apply to Hart residents in the same way.

• For Fall 2027 only, we will update the process for current Hart residents:

  • First Week - Hart residents will have an opportunity to reserve a room in the new Learning Commons.

    • Because the Learning Commons holds fewer residents than Hart Hall, the Housing Office will have set dates within this week where residents are able to reserve their room based on the priority list that will be set by Housing. 

  • Second Week - Hart residents will have a timeframe to be able to reserve a space in any hall. 

  • Third and Fourth Weeks - Hart residents will have the same opportunity for any hall, any room.

• No, the Learning Commons maximum capacity is 242 residents, which will not house all current Hart residents. 

• The Housing Office is developing a process and criteria that will be used to offer available Learning Commons spaces to current Hart residents. Additional information regarding eligibility, priority and selection dates will be communicated directly to Hart residents before the room reservation process begins.

• Hart residents who do not select a space in the Learning Commons will also have opportunities to select from other spaces in other halls.

Specific housing rates for the Learning Commons have not yet been finalized. We will share the pricing with Hart residents as soon as it becomes available.

The student communities are an important part of residential experience. College Heads and Housing administrators are working together to develop a plan for the Hart community that maintains the connections and traditions that are important to its residents.

The decision to close Hart Hall does not change the University’s existing on campus housing requirement.

• Housing will also communicate directly with Hart residents as additional information is finalized. Important dates, deadlines and details will be provided in advance of when students need to take action.

Yes. All facility concerns residents report to hall staff will continue to be addressed by Facilities Management and policies and procedures will remain in effect through May 2027.
